AfriGIS employees volunteer towards Mandela Day Initiative

AfriGIS continues to always strive for better and an important part of that is our focus on creating awareness of the capabilities within the disability sector; ensuring sustainable social change and growth in our community. AfriGIS employees once again volunteered their 67 minutes for Mandela Day 2017 to connect and interact with staff at the Employment Solutions Centre.

The non-profitable organisation works hard in providing a disability-friendly environment since 1999. There are various projects and activities that the staff can actively involve themselves in and realise their fullest potential at each stage of their development, from administrative and computer-based skills, to industrial operations and sewing. This year, the staff created vegetable tunnels that include beetroot; spinach; and onions, which are supplied within the centre every week. They have also started with a job preparation training course which commenced earlier this year. “Our aim is to help people with disabilities bridge the gap between the phase of unemployment to assist them in exploring employer/employee techniques that includes their attitude, expectations and communication skills to prepare them for job interviews and job hunting for the positions they want,” says Elsabe van Vuuren, Employment Solutions Training Manager.

Teamwork in action at Employment Solutions

AfriGIS, along with other volunteers from various companies, came together to assist the staff in their work space – a great way to see their daily activities and tasks. What is so reassuring, is the confidence and fulfilment they show in the work they do. Their ability to overcome their challenges in using their disability to learn new creative skills is surely an inspiration. No job is too big or small as they take pride in the skills that they have acquired at the centre. The interaction amongst the volunteers and the staff gave a whole new meaning to new found friendships. “Action without vision is only passing time, vision without action is merely day dreaming, but vision with action can change the world.” Nelson Mandela.
