AfriGIS helps you access compliant, connected spatial data so the systems that run the country can read from the same map.

Government Notice 4966 of 2024, issued under the Spatial Data Infrastructure Act (Act 54 of 2003), makes four geospatial standards a legal obligation for every South African data custodian and data vendor: metadata (ISO 19115-1 / SANS 1878-1), addressing (ISO 19160-1 / SANS 1883), address data quality (ISO 19160-3 / ISO 19157) and unique identifiers (ISO 19160-1 Lifecycle class). Non-compliance is a statutory offence, and non-compliant datasets cannot be discovered, shared or integrated across the Spatial Data Infrastructure Act (SASDI).

Why the gazetted standards matter

Spatial data is now a critical part of decision making in public and private sector. Data that does not meet the standards cannot be discovered, shared or integrated and non-compliance is a statutory offence. Audits, government tenders and publication to the national metadata catalogue now all depend on it.

What the standards require

The discovery layer that makes your data findable and usable across the national catalogue.

One address model every system can speak, from formal streets to informal settlements.

Measurable, provable quality you can put in front of an auditor.

Persistent IDs that keep a record coherent as streets are renamed and erven subdivided.

The AfriGIS differentiator

AfriGIS helps data custodians meet the gazetted standards with confidence, not by promising to learn them, but because we already run them in production, every day, at national scale. No other South African organisation combines practitioner compliance with standards-body participation.

How AfriGIS gets you compliant

A fixed-structure evaluation of your data against the gazetted standards, delivering evidence in weeks.

Practical, standards-based training on open-source (QGIS) tools, with no software licence cost.

License address data that already meets the standards, with quality and persistent identifiers included.

Our specialists embed alongside your team to configure workflows, publishing and quality reporting.

Applications across government and industry

  • Meet your custodianship mandate and publish to the national metadata catalogue
  • Set the standard your sector follows
  • Align data across departments and municipalitie
  • Turn escalating audit findings into a clear, defensible remediation path
  • Compliant addressing for billing, service delivery and erf registration
  • Open-source delivery, no software licence cost on constrained budgets
  • Stronger credit scoring, risk modelling and regulatory reporting
  • Protection from exposure when data suppliers are not compliant

Key benefits

Meet the SDI Act mandate and answer the Auditor-General with evidence.

A publishable quality certificate, not an assurance

One address model ends duplication and cross-system mismatches.

Build once on a standards-aligned foundation instead of migrating repeatedly.
